Treasure Trove No. 8
19th century Egyptian revival, framed oil paintings, and a folk art witch's boot planter.
Good golly am I excited for this week’s edition of Treasure Trove! The collection of home goods I’m sharing today comes entirely from the (now demolished) house I got to pick last month — if you haven’t checked out my essay on the experience I highly recommend doing so — and it holds some of the finest pieces that I’ve had the privilege to offer through the shop.
It has been a real treat researching, cleaning, and restoring these treasures for their next journey — I’ve learned so much over these past couple weeks. Be sure to subscribe if you aren’t already, as several more pieces will be coming in future letters.
I see you shiver with antici……………pation,
<3 Kari
Treasure Trove is a weekly newsletter featuring freshly unearthed vintage offered through the Passage Keeper shop. Items previewed are available online and in person at my booth.
19th Century Egyptian Revival Appliqué Wall Hanging with Original Finials - Circa the late 19th century, this hand appliquéd wall hanging was made for tourists coming to Egypt during the “Egyptomania” craze that lasted from the 1880s through the 1930s. It includes it’s four original Victorian era metal finials!!
Antique Brass Repoussé and Wood Mirror - This mirror has a wood base with hammered decorative brass nailed on top — plus it retains it’s five original mirrored panels! It dates to the latter part of the 19th century, to the early part of the 20th.
1960s Yellow House Painting in Original Wood Frame - A highly textured painting with an inscription written in pen on the reverse, “On the Wilson Property. Midnight Pass RD. Siesta Key, Sarasota, FL.” It also includes the artist’s home address on the back! :’)
1940s Folk Art Thorn Sculpture - Okay I lied, this is the only piece that wasn’t from the house, but another estate sale I visited recently. This charming folk art sculpture was sitting on a table in the back of the garage, and it’s whimsical Tim Burton-esque nature called to me.
1970s Witch’s Boot Concrete Planter Folk Art - It’s perfect….
1930s Floral Still Life Painting in Original Chippy Paint Frame - Give me anything with chippy paint and my heart turns to mush! This oil painting dated “1930” exudes charm.
1970s Fritz and Floyd Frog Planter Green Polka Dot - Ribbit ribbit. When I found this, it had it’s original sticker still inside (it unfortunately faded when I cleaned it) but it came from a shop in Greenville, South Carolina called “The Gift Shop” and cost $12.
1970s 1980s Garfield Ceramic Lamp - He’s airbrushed, smug as hell, and full of lasagna.
1940s Floral Still Life Watercolor Painting in Gold Frame - So simple, but the flowers are so elegant.
1920s Meta Pluckebaum Cat Lithograph in Original Wood Frame “Brother and Sister” - With a name like Meta Pluckebaum… it’s got to be good!
1950s Typewriter Keyboard Lithograph on Canvas - Studied by children of yore.
1940s Van Gogh Portrait of an Artist Print in Chippy Paint Frame - Again.. chippy paint…
Vintage Rembrandt Soft Pastels Box of 90 - A barely used set of soft pastels for the artist among us!

I love seeing what you find, Kari! The Garfield lamp took me right back to 1981, and I remember those frog scrubby holders very well (1970s, for sure). The thorn sculpture is really cool, very Burton-esque! I swear, my grade 9-10 typing classes (same era as Garfield, early 80s) had that poster up on the wall! I learned to type on an actual typewriter - only the fast typists got to use electric typewriters - and we were not allowed to look at our fingers, so we stared at that chart!
I love your vision, how you see these "unwanted" things for the treasures they truly are! Thank you!
